Mozambican cotton exports to Asia are seen to fetch handsome revenues this year. Speaking at an annual summary meeting of the cotton industry in Sofala province's Beira city, Mr. Paposseco Gabriel, Assistant Director of the Mozambique Cotton Institute, said the country's cotton exports to Asia are likely to fetch around US$ 36 million in revenues this year.
He said Mozambique is likely to export around 36,000 tons of cotton fibre to Asian countries including Singapore, China, Thailand, Bangladesh and India, and added that presently around 70,000 tons of cotton is being processed in the country's ginneries.
Mr. Gabriel further informed that during the ongoing campaign, which is close to conclusion, about 200,000 families in the country undertook cotton cultivation on an approximate area of 135,000 hectares. Cabo Delgado, Niassa, Tete, Nampula and Sofala provinces are believed to have harvested maximum cotton in the country.
Although Mozambique has a capacity to reap around 400,000 to 500,000 tons of raw cotton per campaign, the current production is averaged at around 90,000 tons.
