Egypt has adopted nearly twenty measures to protect the domestic textile industries, including spinning and weaving units and readymade garment manufacturing units.

Dr. Mahmoud Eissa, Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade said the measures will not only protect the industry from unfair competition from some countries, but also support and develop them.

In the past, the textile industry in the country has faced several problems which led to the closure of plants and the latest decision aims to revive the industry while protecting the rights of workers.

Under the new measures, protection fees have been imposed on Egyptian imports of weaving and spinning products and garments, while customs duties are levied on textiles entering the country.

These measures will help the domestic textile industry to withstand the present crisis, the Minister added.

The measures were decided by a 32-member committee that comprised representatives of various stakeholders including the Holding Company for Spinning and Weaving, Consumer Protection Agency, Ministry of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Finance, and others.
