A successful launch for Sarah Fielke's second modern quilting fabric collection, St Ives for Lecien USA at Quilt Market 2011. There has been a huge positive response from local shops and great buzz on social media.

The St Ives collection for Lecien USA has 38 SKUs. There are 8 fun modern designs in 4 contemporary colorways. Here is the story behind Sarah's collection.

"When I was a little girl, we lived in a suburb of Sydney called St Ives. It is now very built up, but when I lived there it was surrounded by bush and it felt like we lived in the country, even though we were close to shops and the city.

St Ives is about my childhood. My mother sewed with me and for me, and I spent a lot of time cutting up fabrics and stitching together haphazard pieces of her scraps for my teddies.

I was like most kids of the '80's - I loved candy, leg warmers and polka dots. I wore my hair in piggy tails with big spotty ribbons tied to them. I listened to Michael Jackson and watched Teen Wolf. I played hide and seek and made cubby houses in our lush, jungle-y acre of garden, and trapped butterflies in my Bug-Catcher.

My favourite colour combinations were the classics of the late '70's and early '80's - not fluoro, but the slightly softer palettes of pink and grey, purple and teal, blue and yellow, red and white. These are the colours that inspired me when I was working towards the combinations for St Ives. I have captured the spirit of the 80's in the collections 4 colorway names – Watermelon (pink and grey), Cherry (red and white), Blue Vanilla (blue and yellow) and Polar Purple Shiver (purple and teal).

St Ives is about catching and bottling the shapes, colours and innocence of growing up, and using them in my quilts. "

Sarah been stitching and sewing for over 30years. She co-opened her first quilt shop, Material Obsession in Hunters Hill, Sydney, where she could work and teach her passion every day, surrounded by inspirational and colourful modern fabrics. Challenging her students and customers with new ideas for using modern fabric, colour, design and sewing techniques, Sarah inspires quilters worldwide to be more creative, find their own style and to step outside their comfort zone.

Breaking down "quilting rules" was the highly popular theme for her first two co-authored ground breaking and successful quilt books now published in four languages - Material Obsession One; Contemporary Quilt Designs, and Material Obsession Two; Shared Inspiration. Her first solo book, Quilting: from little things, published in March 2011, builds on is a journey of discovery.

As an avid fabric lover (and owner of a considerable stash!), Sarah started designing her own fabric collections. She launched her first fabric collection with Lecien, Japan called "From Little Things" in October 2010, which is in quilt and fabric shops now. She hopes it will inspire quilters to grow their own quilts from hercolourful and whimsical ideas. Sarah's second collection, St. Ives, will be released worldwide at the International Quilt Market in Houston, 2011.

Sarah is a prolific quilt designer hand making over 40 quilts a year. Sarah continues to publish patterns and write articles for magazines around the world including Down Under Quilts, Quilters Companion, Quilting Arts and Quilters Newsletter magazine. She appears regularly in quilting features in high profile home magazines worldwide.
