Portuguese textile & apparel exports rise

Textile and apparel exports from Portugal increased by 11 percent year-on-year during the initial 10 months of 2011 to about €4 billion, ATP – the textile and clothing association of Portugal said.

Portuguese textile and clothing industry has been greatly affected by tighter access to credit as well as the financial troubles in Portugal and its main export markets, according to Paulo Vaz, General Director of ATP.

Segment-wise, the exports of textiles grew by 19 percent year-on-year during January-October period, while those of apparels rose by 8 percent y-o-y.

The textile and apparel sector accounts for about 10 percent of overall Portuguese exports, earning €620 million in foreign exchange.
