Several silk products prepared by artisans from different parts of India are on display at the national level silk expo that began in Hyderabad, capital of south Indian State of Andhra Pradesh.
The two-week exhibition-cum-sale of silk items was inaugurated by Ms. Panabaka Lakshmi, the Union Minister of State for Textiles.
Various items like Bihar's Tassar silk, Assam's Moonga silk, Kosa silk from Jharkhand, Bandhej from Rajasthan, West Bengal's Kantha Tangai, Madhya Pradesh's Chanderi and Chhattisgarh's tribal works are being showcased at the expo.
In spite of the handloom industry facing the challenge of technological developments in weaving, some extraordinary silk items like Kanjivaram, Ikkat and Pochampalli still have heavy demand within the country.
The handloom sector in India is believed to be serving as a source of livelihood for around 4.3 million people, who are directly or indirectly engaged in the industry.
