Exquisite work of skilled artisans from 22 Weavers' Service Centres of the National Centre for Textile Design (NCTD) is being displayed at the ongoing Tantavi 'Silken' exhibition in Thiruvanthapuram, the capital of the south Indian State of Kerala.

NCTD organizes theme-based mobile exhibitions under its trademark - Tantavi, which means “of the loom” in Sanskrit, at major textile centres in the country. The current exhibition 'Silken' is the fifth in the series.

Tantavi exhibitions provide an opportunity for people to acquaint themselves with India's wealth of handlooms.

On display at the current exhibition are 126 various designs of embellished sarees, shawls, stoles and home textiles. Besides common people, the exhibition is especially attracting manufacturers, exporters and designers.

At the ongoing exhibition, 19 sample designs from Varanasi are on display. The innovations include an extra weft of real gold and silver zari or silver zari or katan and zari that give a different look to the traditional banarasi sarees.

Experimentation on tussar silk can be seen in products from Raigarh. There is an extra weft and wrap of spun tussar on its samples, besides the use of traditional motifs on the pallu part of the sarees.

Maheswaris, Patolas, Kanchipuram, Jamdani and eri spun silk fabrics from Guwahati are also among the items that are showcased at the exhibition.

In addition, there are samples of cotton-silk shawls and home textiles from Kerala.
