PX production capacity in Europe and the United States showed contraction and the same time, consumption from China was strong in Asian market.
Global paraxylene (PX) capacity stood at around 38.8 million tons in 2011. Theoretically excess PX production capacity was about 2.30 million tons (calculated at 90 percent capacity utilization and maintenance schedules).
Asian PX demand increased by over 1.40 million metric tons in the second half of 2011. As demand growth was strong, operating rate of PX plants gradually recovered to 90 percent.
However, new PX capacity addition will lag behind downstream PTA industry in 2012-2013, and will gradually become more balanced after 2014.
