Ivory Coast to continue with cotton sector revival

Ivory Coast, once a major cotton exporter in West Africa, will continue to implement measures aimed at revival of cotton sector in the country.

As part of measures for revival of cotton production, Ivory Coast proposes to introduce a new electronic system this year, which would help identify all cotton growers in the country.

Under the new system, all farmers and cooperatives in the country would be allotted a national identification number, and persons willing to sell their produce to factories would necessarily need to have such a number.

This would rule out existence of middlemen, which would help farmers to increase their earnings. Besides, the system would also facilitate availability of reliable production figures.

Recently, a cotton classification laboratory was set up in the country under the aegis of the European Union to take care of the quality control aspect and identify high-quality Ivorian cotton for export to world markets.

Backed by continued revival of the cotton sector, Ivory Coast's cotton production for this fiscal is estimated to be around 240,000 tons by the time the current harvesting season concludes in February 2012.

Next fiscal, the West African country has targeted to increase its cotton production to 260,000 tons.

Estimations for cotton production for both the current as well as next fiscal are higher compared to production of 175,000 tons registered in 2010-11.

Prior to 2002-2003, when civil war divided Ivory Coast into two parts, the country produced around 400,000 tons of cotton per annum.
