Spanish Valencian region textile exports rise

Backed by rising exports, the textile companies belonging to the Spanish autonomous region of Valencia managed to gross sales of 2,000 million euros in 2011, according to data released by the Association of Textile Entrepreneurs of Valencia (ATEVAL).

Exports made up 35 percent of the total sales of Valencian textile firms in 2010, and the percentage would have increased in 2011, considering that exports had grown by 17 percent year-on-year during January-October period, ATEVAL said.

However, the domestic consumption of textiles, apparels and home furnishings declined by around 7 percent last year because of the difficult economic situation and slowdown in construction sector, which meant lesser number of new houses to decorate.

This led to a decline of nearly 2 percent in production figures of Valencian textile sector during the year.

There are 1639 textile companies in Valencian region that employ a total of 24,300 workers.

ATEVAL said the textile industry in Valencia has managed to survive, but the economic situation still remains difficult. It added that the government should provide incentives to the textile industry that would, in turn, contribute to economic recovery.

There is an immediate need to bring more capital into circulation and make loans available to businesses. Otherwise, the textile industry may experience declining economic activity in the coming months, ATEVAL added.
