There has been a jump of 19 percent year-on-year in cotton arrivals at ginneries in Pakistan till January 15, 2012, according to the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).

The sharp rise in cotton arrivals in 2011-12 season is mainly owing to an increase of 3.173 million bales of cotton production in Punjab province.

Earlier, there were apprehensions that cotton production might be low this season, as floods had damaged cotton crop in some parts of Sindh province.

PCGA said 12.82 million bales of cotton reached ginneries across Pakistan till January 15 this year, compared to arrivals of 10.76 million bales of cotton till the same time last year, showing an increase of 2.069 million bales.

From the 12.82 million bales received, 12.53 million bales have been pressed and 290,172 bales remain unginned, PCGA report said.

It added that 10.76 million bales were sold to textile mills, and 613,014 bales were purchased by exporters, leaving 1.15 million bales unsold with the ginners.

The data was collected through joint efforts of PCGA, Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) and All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA).

The figures indicate a 30.48 percent fall in cotton production of Sindh province this season as it harvested 2.51 million bales so far compared to 3.62 million bales during the same period last season.
