The exports of handicrafts from Peru increased to US$ 55.3 million during the first 11 months of 2011, registering a rise of 8 percent over exports worth US$ 51.3 million achieved during the corresponding period of 2010, as per figures released by Peruvian Exporters' Association (la Asociación de Exportadores or ADEX).
ADEX said there has not been any increase in the number of shipments, as was seen during the past few years, due to global economic crisis.
However, it lauded the efforts by entrepreneurs to constantly innovate and come up with new products.
The increase in raw material prices and decline in exchange rate has also affected handicraft exports, ADEX added.
The US was the largest importer of Peruvian handicrafts worth about US$ 22.6 million, accounting for nearly 40 percent of total Peruvian handicraft exports during the period.
Germany, Japan and New Zealand were other leading importers of Peruvian handicrafts with imports worth US$ 3.7 million, US$ 3.5 million and US$ 3.4 million, respectively.
Art Atlas, Allpa, Nakayama del Perú, CY Artesanías Trading and Kero Design were some of the prominent Peruvian companies that bagged a major share in handicraft exports.
