Ethiopian textile exports rise significantly

Exports of textile and textile products from Ethiopia have gone up considerably over the last six months, according to the Ethiopian Textile Development Institute.

Ethiopia earned around US$ 44 million in textile and textile item exports during the last two quarters, which is almost US$ 23 million more than exports registered during the same period last year, Sileshi Lemma, Director General of the Textile Development Institute said.

Almeda Textile, Elsie Addis Textile Factory, Aika Addis Textile and Investment Group, NovaStar Garment plc, Ma Textile and Garment Factory and Kombolcha Textile Share Company were the major exporters during the period, Sileshi said.

Ethiopia mainly shipped its textile and textile goods to China, Germany, Sudan, Belgium, United Kingdom, Turkey, Djibouti, United States of America and United Arab Emirates.

According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Industry's Corporate Director, Melaku Taye, over the past two quarters, Ethiopia earned US$ 137.7 million in export of manufactured items, including leather and leather goods, chemical products, textiles and garments.

The earnings of the manufacturing sector are continuously growing, and the revenues generated during the last two quarters are over US$ 56.7 million more than revenues generated during the same period last year, Melaku noted.

Various measures like enhancing raw material supply, introducing a speedy customs system, investment promotion and developing marketing links domestically and internationally, are being employed by the country to boost export earnings, he added.
