The government of India has banned exports of raw cotton with immediate effect, without assigning any reasons.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification on Monday which states, “Export of cotton (HS Codes 5201 & 5203) has been prohibited till further orders”.

The notification also adds that export against registration certificates already issued will also not be allowed.

Fibre2fashion had earlier reported on Saturday that, prices of Shankar-6 variety of raw cotton had declined by 5.8 percent in the month of February.

The fallout of this decision could be a further fall in domestic cotton prices.
