The supply of gas to textile industries in Punjab province would be increased from the current three days to five days a week from March 26, 2012, Pakistan's Minister for Petroleum Dr. Asim Hussain has announced.

The Federal Minister agreed that the textile industry in Punjab had suffered loss in terms of production, exports and jobs since the onset of the winter season due to shortage of gas.

Dr. Hussain said the increase in temperature and induction of about 225 mmcfd of gas into the system has enabled him to raise the gas supply, which would in turn, help in increasing exports and generating new employment opportunities.

He said the gas supply situation would be better this year compared to 2011 and the Ministry would try to provide gas seven days a week to the textile industry in Punjab as it had suffered the most due to gas shortage.

He added that there would be addition of another 1000 mmcfd of gas to the system by 2013, which would further ease the shortage of gas in the country.

He informed that the Government is making efforts to remove energy shortages by importing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as well as by increasing domestic supplies.

He revealed that the Government is also mulling on an offer by India to provide LNG by laying a 25-30 km pipeline. However, a decision on the matter would be taken after the publication of the negative list for India, which would contain the list of items that cannot be traded, he added.
