Textile and clothing exports from Tunisia registered a year-on-year rise of around 7.5 percent during the initial two months of the current year, as per the Tunisian Exports Promotion Centre (CEPEX) data.
Tunisia's textile and apparel exports grew to 876.6 MTD (million Tunisian dinars) during January-February 2012, compared to exports worth 815.1 MTD during the same period last year.
Likewise, the sector's imports rose by 10.2 percent year-on-year during the two-month period and touched 536 MTD.
This resulted in a positive trade balance of 340.6 MTD, which is 3.6 percent higher than 2011.
While garment items accounted for 86 percent of all Tunisian textile and clothing exports, textile items constituted only 14 percent of the exports.
The major apparel items exported by Tunisia were jeans pants, formal apparels, shirts, T-shirts and lingerie.
More than 75 percent of Tunisia's textile and garment exports during the period were destined to European countries, of which, 34 percent of exports were towards France, 29.2 percent towards Italy, 6.7 percent towards Belgium and 10.3 percent towards Germany. Exports to Germany, however, dipped by 3.6 percent.
