Ibrahim Yakowa, the Governor of the Kaduna state has asked the Federal Government of Nigeria to implement strict measures to check illegal import of textile items into the country.

Mr. Yakowa forewarned that if such illegal imports are not curbed, it would ruin all efforts aimed at revival of the textile industry in Nigeria.

Addressing the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria's (NUTGTWN) 10th Quadrennial National Delegates' Conference (NDC) in Asaba, capital of the Delta state, Mr. Yakowa called upon all the Nigerians to make joint efforts to bring back the country's textile industry to its pre-1987 boom period.

Expressing concern over the high rate of illegal imports of textile items into the country, which is negatively affecting domestic production, the Governor said it has resulted in reduced patronage for Nigeria-made textiles.

Speaking on behalf of the Governor, Deputy Governor Muktar Yero said the textile industry, which was once the biggest employer in Nigeria, is now waning steadily due to illegal imports.

He added that if the issue of illegal textile imports is not addressed immediately and revival of textile industries is not ensured, then it may become difficult for the country's textile industry to retain its competitive edge.
