The state government of north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh would make special efforts to promote Banarasi textile items, state Cabinet Minister Om Prakash Singh has said.

Inaugurating the general body meeting and felicitation ceremony of Baranasi Vastra Udyog Sangh (BVUS) in Varanasi, the Minister said the region of Varanasi has earned a special recognition across the globe for its unique Banarasi sarees.

Talking about incentives and subsidies for development of the textile units in the region, the Minister said the assurance of giving power subsidy of Rs. 60 per powerloom per month would also be extended to computer-aided embroidery machines in the region.

He informed that a special meeting will be held to devise plans to revive past glory of Banarasi textiles, including embroidery work and silk sarees.

BVUS General Secretary Rajan Bahal urged the government to extend 25 percent subsidy on materials that are used in the preparation of Banarasi textile products. He also sought government's support in setting up a designing institute in Varanasi.
