BWMB to provide peep into its wool supply chain
Apr '12
The British Wool Marketing Board will be at next week's National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs' Annual Convention and AGM in Torquay to spread the message about BWMB's activities and the variety of training courses on offer.

Representatives of BWMB will be present at the NFYFC's Agricultural and Rural Affairs Forum on Saturday 28 April to provide information on BWMB's work, the Campaign for Wool and details of the training courses BWMB offers.

Although sheep farmers sell their wool through BWMB many do not know what happens to their wool once it leaves the farm, explains Gareth Jones, BWMB's Producer Relations Manager.

“In 2012 we are teaming up with the NFYFC to offer YFC members the chance to visit BWMB's Bradford headquarters and see the wool supply chain in action.

“These study trips will include the chance to see one of BWMB's electronic wool auctions in action and also see wool being graded in the Bradford depot. Additionally, YFC members on a visit will be able to visit a scouring plant to see the next stage of the wool supply chain.”

BWMB South West England Board Member Brian Dallyn who will be present at the forum said the opportunity to work with the next generation of farmers was an excellent chance to showcase BWMB's work. “For many once the wool is shorn from the sheep they have no idea what happens to it next.

“But there is a whole industry relying on British farmers producing good quality wool and the more each part of the supply chain can understand the work of the other parts the better the chain is able to operate. We're delighted to be working with NFYFC on these study trips and believe they will benefit both organisations tremendously.”

Alongside these study trips BWMB will of course be promoting its shearing training courses which are always popular with YFC members, said Mr Jones. “Shearing is a universal skill and one which many YFC members have used to great effect both here in the UK and overseas.

“It is a skill which can be applied anywhere in the world and a skilled shearer will never be short of work. With many young people wanting to travel, learning to shear before you do can be a very profitable way of funding your travels.”

And, outwith these more serious messages, the BWMB representatives will also be on hand to welcome a group of Yorkshire YFC members to Torquay following their epic voyage from Sheffield to the south Devon coast on mobility scooters.

The members are taking part in a charity fundraising effort named 'Yorkie to Torkie' in a bid to raise funds for the Sue Ryder healthcare charity. BWMB is supporting their effort after the members decided to tow models representing what they believe to be two of Yorkshire's greatest exports, wool and potatoes, behind the mobility scooters during the trip.
