The imports of silk from Cambodia by European countries have dried up this year.
There have been no exports of silk to Europe so far this year, Seung Kimyonn, Director of Cambodian Craft Cooperation, said.
He informed that in 2011, the orders for silk from EU were worth US$ 100,000, but there are no orders since the last few months.
Exports of handicrafts from Cambodia, particularly to Europe, have declined by nearly 70 percent during the first three months of the current year, compared to the same period last year, said Lun Yeng, Executive Director of the Federation of Associations of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises of Cambodia.
He attributed the sharp drop in handicraft exports to the fact that Europeans have stopped purchase of non-essential items due to a slowdown in their economies.
