Ethiopian cotton growers seek separate nodal agency

Ethiopian cotton growers raised a demand for establishment of a separate federal authority empowered to address the industry issues, during a consultative meeting with officials of the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research and the Ministries of Agriculture and Industry.

They alleged that the Ministry of Agriculture bureau designated to take care of agriculture investment is falling short in addressing the industry issues.

In recent times there has been an unexpected rise in stock surplus, as cotton growers' enhanced production to cater to the rising demand of the textile firms, which faced a shortage last year. This has created a need for the establishment of a separate agency.

The Cotton Growers and Ginners Association said it had submitted a draft bill proposing establishment of a federal agency, which was forwarded to the Cabinet, but there has been no response from the Government so far.

The proposal to set up a nodal agency for dealing with cotton issues has also won support of industry stakeholders and others like textile factories, entomologists, agriculture experts and chemical and pesticide firms.
