Ibrahim Shehu Shema, Governor of Nigeria's Katsina state, has recognized Katsina as the largest cotton producing state in the country.
Inaugurating a workshop on cotton production in Katsina, the Governor informed that the state has been harvesting around 90,000 to 100,000 tons of cotton per annum for the last five years.
He said that cotton cultivation is undertaken in 23 of the 34 local government areas of the state, which means that around two-third or 67 percent of the state is under cotton cultivation.
The state administration has identified 17 local governments as major cotton cultivators, while six others have been categorized as minor producers, he added.
All thanks to its large-scale cotton production, the state houses nine ginneries that are operational at present, the Governor said.
To boost agricultural activities in the state, the government provided 300 tractors to farmers at subsidized rates. Besides, farmers were provided interest free loans so as to help them raise their contribution to the state's economy, Mr. Shema said.
