China now accounts for around 35 percent of textile exports and is also the biggest importer of Taiwanese textile items, said the Secretary-General of Taiwan Textile Federation - Huang Weiji.

He hoped that the consultation on the second list of items which will attract reduced ECFA tariff would start soon.

This would make it possible for cross-strait trade and economic cooperation to the next level, he added.

Among 136 items in the Textile Early Harvest List, import tariffs of 125 items have reduced to zero.

He said, “From the early 90s of last century, China has been the largest export market for Taiwan's products and Taiwan's textiles.

This has been made possible due to rise of Taiwan's green, low carbon tech functional fabrics. Most of the high-end functional fabrics used by Chinese textile industry are mostly from Taiwan. "

Huang Weiji stressed that global brands like Nike, Adidas, Columbia, purchase functional fabrics from Taiwan and have them converted in to clothing in any of the Southeast Asia countries.

After the Early Harvest List of 136 textile items, there are still 1100 items that need further consultation between the two sides. Lowering tariffs early will further integrate the markets of both sides.
