Cotton production is expected to skyrocket in the current cotton season in the African country of Malawi.

According to second round crop estimates of the government, cotton output is projected to surge by a massive 365 percent from the previous season.

The government estimates that cotton production will reach 244,154 tons in the 2011-12 season, up from 52,456 tons in the last season.

The main reason for this stupendous rise, is the US $10 million that the government set aside in the last budget to help increase cotton productivity.

In the process, cotton acreage has doubled from 200,000 hectares in 2010-11 to around 4000,000 hectares in the current season.
