The Government of Zambia has taken the first step towards reviving operations at Kabwe-based Mulungushi Textiles, which was closed in 2007, by appointing Brigadier-General Ken Mulenga from Zambia National Service (ZNS) as General Manager of the firm, to monitor its operations.
The firm set up in 1970s operated as a joint venture with China and produced several kinds of apparels at industry level which included military uniforms.
Since China withdrew itself from the joint venture, the huge structure of the mill on the Great North Road is lying unused, and some parts have even collapsed.
The Zambian Government asked Gen Mulenga to initiate efforts for revival of operations at the mill. In the meantime, the Government will introduce some additional measures aimed at the same purpose.
Once operational, Mulungushi Textiles is believed to extend great business opportunities to domestic suppliers of goods and services and will also benefit cotton growers.
Post closure of the mill, the Kabwe Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) had been urging the Zambian Government to make efforts to revive the same.
