Gujarat ginners welcome lifting of cotton export ban

Ginners in western Indian state of Gujarat have welcomed the Union Government's decision to completely lift the ban on cotton exports.

The lifting of the ban on cotton exports from India has driven the prices of cotton upwards in the domestic markets, Anand Popat, Secretary of Saurashtra Ginners Association (SGA), said.

In the next two to three months time, the price of raw cotton in Gujarat would touch Rs. 4,500 per quintal, Mr. Popat said.

India had imposed a ban on cotton exports in March this year over concerns about shortfalls in supply for the domestic textile industry during the latter part of the season.

However, after a review of the situation, the Government reversed the ban allowing companies and traders to resume their cotton shipments abroad.
