Dr Sanjiv Kamat new President of SDC

May '12
Dr Sanjiv Kamat is the new president of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC). He takes over from Mun Lim Cheung. Dr Kamat is the Society's first ever president from India and brings a wealth of experience with him.

Dr Kamat, 'I joined SDC in 1984 and became a Fellow in 1990. I was instrumental in starting SDC India and served as Honorary Secretary, Vice Chairman and Chairman of the region. I was also a founder trustee of SDC EC India and served as their Chairman Trustee for two years. My appointment as President epitomises the transition of SDC towards globalisation and honours the work done by SDC EC India. My objective as President is to promote the Society internationally to as many coloration hubs as possible, be it textile, paint or leather. I look forward to working with the staff and trustees to promote the Society internationally'.

The new president will work closely with SDC's Chief Executive, Dr Graham Clayton. Comments Dr Clayton, 'The SDC's ability to be effective is immensely dependent on it's members and their input, support and work as Officers, Trustees and - for a few exceptional individuals - as President. Dr Kamat is one such exceptional individual with experience, connections and knowledge that will greatly strengthen the SDC during his Presidency. Dr Kamat's appointment has generated quite a buzz of excitement amongst those I have spoken with. He obviously has the experience, skills and networks to ensure a good Presidency but it is perhaps his dedication to the industry that gets people excited the most. I and all at the SDC look forward to working with him."'

After completing a Masters degree from UDCT, Mumbai, India Dr Kamat was awarded a PhD from the University of Leeds, England. He started his industrial career in the technical services department of Bombay Textile Research Association, Mumbai and then was with Sandoz (India) for 15 years in various functions. He continued an additional two years with Clariant (India) and since 1997 he has been Chief Marketing, Pidilite Industries Limited responsible for sales of products to the textile and pigment powder user industries.

Dr Kamat has served as a member on the research advisory board of Manmade Textile Research Association, also the Board of Textile Studies at SNDT, Women's University, and Textile Council at the Bureau of Indian Standards. Whilst at Sandoz, he was the editor of Sandoz's Colour Chronicle. Since 2001, he has been on the editorial advisory panel of Colourage. In 2007 he was invited to join the Editorial Board of the Colour Index.

In 2011 Dr Kamat was honoured with SDC's Gold Medal.

At a recent event at the Abundant Life Conference Centre in Bradford, UK, Dr Kamat became the new president of SDC.
