Thailand will remain a key exporter of textiles, even after the Asean Economic Community (AEC) becomes a reality in 2015, according to Mr. Banpot Tekacharin, Director at the Textile Industry Division of the Department of Industrial Promotion.

He was speaking at a workshop for small and medium enterprises, which was aimed at preparing them for the implementation of the AEC. The workshop was organized by the Department of Industrial Promotion.

Mr. Tekacharin said both Indonesia and Thailand are currently competing to become key textile exporters globally.

He estimated that Thailand’s textile exports this year would be worth around 200 billion baht, with Japan, the Asean countries, the Middle East, Europe and the US being its major export destinations.

He said the ongoing debt crisis in Europe would not much affect Thailand’s textile exports as Europe is not the main market for Thai textiles.

Mr. Thirapap Aewpittayakul, Managing Director of Jong Pattana Co. Ltd. said the Thai Government must urge other Asean countries, especially Indonesia and Philippines, to lower tariffs on Thai goods to zero percent.
