A three-phase project embarked on by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs for promotion of domestic textile and apparel industries has started reaping results.

In its first and second stages from 2009 to this year, the project drew NT$ 62.6 billion or US$ 2.09 billion worth of investments in textile industry, leading to a rise in the industry’s output value from 2008’s NT$ 446.7 billion to NT$ 500.8 billion in 2011.

In the third phase of the project, the Ministry set up four design and sample centres over a year. Till now, the textile and apparel industry has received direct investments worth NT$ 280 million and other related investments worth NT$ 800 million under this stage.

The four centres, which include a socks making centre in Chunghwa County, a towel making unit in Yunlin County and an apparel producing unit in Taipei City, help domestic firms with designing their products and to test the market.

The said project has also inspired the local textile and apparel firms to develop their personalized brands and sales network.

Pursuant to the project, the Ministry is hopeful that the domestic textile and apparel industry would develop five international brands, generating revenues of NT$ 2 billion per annum.
