Workers of Egypt’s Mahalla city based Misr Spinning and Co. have suspended their strike that they began a week ago, after  partial acceptance of their demands by the company management.

The workers, who were protesting against low wages, were promised distribution of profit-sharing payments that have been delayed since 1992, and a hike in yearly bonuses and other perks by the company management.

Relieved by acceptance of some of their demands, the workers agreed to keep the rest of their demands at bay till Eid, a festival that marks the end of the fasting period of Ramadan.

The pending demands of workers include upgrading company’s health-care system and restructuring of the company’s management through removal of corrupt officials.

The strike, forming a part of labour activism in Egypt, is seen to be hampering the way of the newly-elected President Mohamed Mursi’s efforts to put back the country’s economy on track.

Egyptian economy is currently grappling to recover after last year’s uprising against Hosni Mubarak that led to change in Government.

The strikes held by workers in Mahalla, in the Nile Delta north of Cairo, during 2006 and 2008, received widespread publicity and are believed to have played a major role in stirring up the uprising against Mubarak regime.
