The State of Gujarat, which is the second largest cotton producing state in India, may witness a plunge in cotton production in the 2012-13 season. Till this week, Gujarat has received only 50 percent of the season’s rainfall.

The Saurashtra and Kutch regions in the state which are the major cotton producing states in the region have an even higher rain deficit.

“Cotton production may fall to just 1.5 million bales in 2012-13 from 7.0 million bales (1 bale = 170 Kg) in last season if rains fail”, Mr Anand Popat, Secretary of the Saurashtra Ginners Association (SGA) exclusively told fibre2fashion.

“While rest of Gujarat has received widespread rains in the last four days, in Saurashtra and Kutch there has been no rains. The flowering of cotton crop will be affected, which will directly hit the yield”, he added.

“The cotton crop is however anticipated to increase in Andhra Pradesh from 5.5 million bales to around 7-7.5 million bales; in Maharashtra too cotton crop is expected to hike between 1-1.5 million bales.

“So overall, cotton crop in India is expected to touch around 32.5-34 million bales in the 2012-13 cotton season, which is nearly equivalent to that achieved in the 2011-12 season”, he concluded by saying.
