Monsanto, an American multinational agricultural biotechnology company, is in the process of developing a new variety of water-efficient cotton, which will provide better water efficiency in both dry lands and well-irrigated farms.

Speaking at the Australian Cotton Conference in Queensland, Monsanto scientist Phoong Tang said, the special variety of cotton will offer superior yield stability to the farmers and it will help them meet the growing demand for cotton fibre worldwide.

The company is also trying to develop cotton varieties that are tolerant to herbicides like dicamba and glufosinate, Ms. Tang said.

Additionally, Monsanto is soon going to launch its ‘Bollgard III’ cotton variety, which has superior insect resistant capabilities compared to the company’s earlier cotton varieties like ‘Ingard’ and ‘Bollgard II’.

Bollgard III is expected to enhance the resistance of cotton crop towards caterpillar pests, according to Ms. Tang.

Founded in 1901, Monsanto specializes in producing and marketing a range of agricultural chemicals, genetically engineered seeds and crop protection solutions.
