The production of cotton in Western African country of Ivory Coast is likely to exceed the previous estimate of 300,000-315,000 tons for 2012-13, the country’s ginners’ association has said.

Christophe N'Dri, Executive Secretary of the association, said by July-end cotton plantation was done on an area of 340,000 hectares, following which they now expect the country to produce a minimum 340,000 tons of cotton this season.

The completion of fertilizer distribution to farmers prior to July-end and the handsome price they received for their new crop are the two factors that influenced several farmers to take up cotton crop this season, he said.

Current year’s cotton season started on May 20 with a fixed season-long farmgate price of 265 CFA francs or US$ 0.51 per kg. If world cotton prices remain firm throughout the season, farmers of the country are also due to get a bonus at the end of the season.

Ivory Coast’s cotton output for 2011-12 season totalled about 260,000 tons.

Prior to outbreak of 2002-2003 civil war, the West African country, with an annual production of nearly 400,000 tons, positioned itself as one of the region’s biggest cotton exporter.
