Cotton sowing area likely to decline in Australia

Cotton sowing season for 2012-13 crop has just started in Australia and already experts are estimating the national area under cotton plantation for the upcoming season to be lower by around 20 percent compared to last year.
Lower prices of cotton in international markets is considered the main reason for a decrease in area under cotton, as farmers are shifting to growing other crops that offer better return on their investment.
Last season, Australia produced a record 5.4 million bales of cotton, which is still being ginned. The consumption of cotton was much less than the harvest of 2011-12 crop.
Experts say the reduction in cotton sowing area for the upcoming season would be mainly in the rain-fed region, where the area under cotton is likely to dip by as much as 50 percent, especially in some areas in central and southern Queensland.
However, cotton cultivators in irrigated areas are likely to stick to growing cotton, they add.
