China’s import of mono ethylene glycol (MEG) increased by 11.76 percent on a month-on-month basis in August this year, while they dipped 1.69 percent on a year-on-year basis, according to the data released by Chinese customs.

In August 2012, China imported 659,089 tons of MEG compared to its imports of 589,735 tons in July 2012.

MEG imports from Canada and Japan increased substantially by 802.19 percent month-on-month and 664.91 percent m-o-m, respectively, in August 2012. Singapore, South Korea, Iran and Saudi Arabia were the other countries from which China imported more quantity of MEG in August compared to previous month.

During the month, China’s MEG imports from the US were down significantly by 73.76 percent over July imports. Imports from Kuwait and Taiwan too decreased by 36.67 percent m-o-m and 27.06 percent m-o-m, respectively, in August.

The MEG imports from the US declined due to the disruption in MEG plant operations caused by Hurricane Issac. The imports from Kuwait were affected by the shutdown of Equate’s MEG plant after a fire on July 31.
