Cotton exports from the West African nation of Ivory Coast have more than doubled during the first eight months of the current year.

From January to August 2012, Ivory Coast exported 239,198 tons of cotton, compared to exports of 81,884 tons made during the corresponding period of last year.

In August 2012, 28,639 tons of cotton was exported from Abidjan port, as against exports of 17,732 tons during the same month in 2011.

The increase in cotton exports was mainly due to resumption of normalcy after around four months of post-election conflict.

The end of conflict has resulted in resumption of shipments through the port of Abidjan.

Prior to the 2002-03 civil war, Ivory Coast used to produce about 400,000 tons of cotton annually. However, nearly a decade long crisis affected the country’s cotton production.

In 2012-13 season, Ivory Coast is expected to produced around 340,000 tons of cotton.
