The regional government of Spain’s modern autonomous community of Aragon has recently signed a deal with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Zaragoza, Zaragoza Fair Industries as well as the Federation of Textiles and Apparel of Aragon (FITCA) to boost its textile and apparel sector.

The Aragon textile and clothing industry has lost around 7,000 jobs since the last twelve years. In 2000, the textile industry employed 15,000 people, but by 2012, the total number of people employed in the country’s textile and garment industry was reduced to 8,000.

Aragon’s Industry and Innovation Department said the new agreement would strengthen and consolidate the presence of the region’s brands outside the autonomous region.

The agreement, which will be effective till December 2013 and will be renewed annually, will also facilitate exports and implement several joint activities for the textile and clothing companies.

As per the agreement, a committee would be constituted consisting of two representatives from each of the signatory organizations. The committee will be tasked with analyzing the textile and apparel sector, preparing action plans, studying project feasibility in the external markets and evaluating results.
