NID to soon be declared as an 'Institute of Excellence'

The Ahmedabad, Gujarat-based National Institute of Design (NID), which is internationally acclaimed as one of the finest educational and research institutions for Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design, would soon be declared as an ‘Institute of Excellence’, Union Textiles Minister Anand Sharma has said.
 
Speaking at the World Crafts Summit held recently in Chennai, the Minister said NID has contributed a lot to support handloom weavers and handicraft artisans and it will soon be declared an ‘Institute of Excellence’ by Government of India.
 
He informed that efforts are also underway to set up four more NIDs in various parts of the country.
 
Moreover, the Government is also considering establishment of an academy for handicrafts, on the lines of national academies, the Minister said.
 
NID is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India and is recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.
