SODECOTON, the Cotton Development Company of Cameroon, said it foresees a further rise in its raw cotton output during next 2012-13 season, a press release stated.

Iya Mohamed, General Manager, SODECOTON said as compared 2011-12’s output, they expect the output for 2012-13 to grow to around 227,000 tons, up 22.7 percent year-on-year.

During 2011-12 season the company reaped 185,000 tons of raw cotton, higher than its 2010-11’s yield of 136,000 tons.

Mr. Mohamed said the rise in output was mainly on account of introduction of new variety of high-yielding seeds.

Registering a rise of 32 percent, the company’s turnover for 2011-12 season grew to 98.6 billion CFA francs from previous season’s 74.6 billion CFA francs. The turnover for 2012-13 season is expected to increase to 120 billion CFA francs, he added.

Against 2010-11’s raw cotton output of 57,300 tons, SODECOTON produced 77,800 tons of cotton during 2011-12.

Over 200,000 farmers in Cameroon engage themselves in cotton farming. The country is considered to be one of the 10 biggest cotton producing countries of Africa.
