Pakistan ginners urge govt to levy tax on Indian cotton

Ginners in Pakistan have urged the Government to impose a duty on cotton imports from India, in order to safeguard their interests.

In a statement, Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) ex-executive member Ihsanul Haq said the Indian Government has not imposed any upper ceiling on exports at present. The policy also allows any individual or enterprise to export limitlessly under various names.

As a result, Pakistan’s cotton imports from India are likely to grow significantly, which is likely to lead a fall in cotton prices in Pakistan.

Hence, to safeguard the domestic cotton producers and ginning industry, a regulatory duty should be imposed on cotton imports from India, Mr. Haq said.

Rationalizing the call for the regulatory duty, Mr. Haq noted that India almost doubled the duty on sugar imports from Pakistan to protect its farmers.

He said Pakistan should also subject cotton imports from India to regulatory duty, so as to enable local cotton producers reap reasonable returns for their produce. The move would also safeguard the local ginners from economic disadvantage, he added.
