Indonesia recently held a demonstration-cum-training session on its traditional batik making art in Karachi.

The event held under the aegis of Consulate General of Indonesia was unveiled by Rossalis R. Adenan, the Consul General of Indonesia in Karachi, a statement said.

Adenan said that the event was held to provide an opportunity to Pakistani citizens, especially ladies and the art enthusiasts, and wives of diplomatic community in Karachi to learn and develop a better understanding about traditional Indonesian batik art.

He said Indonesia has over 17,000 islands and is home to over 240 million people. The visitors should thus be aware about batik, which is recognized as a highly developed traditional fabric of the country.

Batik, a generally accepted cultural heritage of Indonesia, is a trademark that has brought pride to the nation. In October 2009, UNESCO even assigned a tag to it of being ‘Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’.

The word batik he said is believed to have been drawn from Javanese word ‘mbatik’, which means a fabric with small dots.
