Marking a year-on-year fall of 3.7 percent, cotton arrival in Pakistan during the current season till January 1, 2013 has plummeted to 11.586 million bales of seed cotton (phutti) from 12.032 million bales received by ginners by same time last year, the fortnightly report released by Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) showed.

PCGA spokesperson Shehzad Ali Khan said around 9.735 million bales of cotton received by January 1 have been sold to textile mills, while another 1.868 million bales have been exported, leaving an unsold stock of 1.664059 million bales.

Mr. Khan said that PCGA expected the crop output to remain below the Government set target. However, the actual output for the season now seems to be crossing the 12.5 million mark.

Giving a state-wise analysis, he said Sindh ginneries received 3.235 million bales during the period, which is 34.5 percent or 829,820 bales higher than the quantity of cotton received by same period last year.

However, a fall was noticed in cotton reaching Punjab ginneries during the period. Around 8.352 million bales of seed cotton reached Punjab ginneries during the period, which is 13.25 percent or 445,440 bales less than last year.

Of the 1,200 ginneries operational in the country, 882 are concentrated in Punjab and Sindh, Mr. Khan informed.
