Indian govt extends cotton export through Wagah border

Jan '13
The Government of India has given a 30-day extension for export of cotton to Pakistan through Wagah border in view of delay in clearing consignments being experienced at Wagah Land Customs Port.

In its circular, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said the matter of delay caused at Wagah Land Customs Port in clearing of consignments due to heavy congestion has been raised with the concerned authorities.

The circular said that in respect of export of cotton, Registration Certificate (RC) holders have been given 30 days time to export.

In view of the congestion at Wagah, exporters of cotton to Pakistan are permitted to seek one time extension in the validity period of the RC for a maximum period of 30 days, or surrender unutilized or partially utilized RC to the concerned Registration Authority (RA) without inviting penalty.

DGFT clarified that the 30-day extension would be available only for such exporters of cotton who have obtained RC to export to Pakistan.

In addition, the benefit will be available only if request for revalidation or request for surrendering the unutilized or under utilized RC is made to the concerned RA within the validity period of the respective RC.

RAs are authorized to take necessary action and they would submit a weekly report to the Headquarter about the number of RCs re-validated (and their quantities) and the number of RCs surrendered (and their quantities), the circular said.
