China's cotton sowing area likely to decline in 2013

The total area under cotton in China during the next season in 2013 is likely to decline according to a recent survey conducted by the Farmers Cooperative Branch of China Cotton Association and Huatai Cotton Professional Cooperatives in Xinjiang.
The survey on cotton planting intention in 2013 covered 2,792 farmers in 310 cities and corporations of 12 mainland provinces and the Xinjiang autonomous region.
The survey, conducted in December 2012, concludes that the area under cotton plantation in next season is likely to decline due to implementation of the Government’s temporary cotton purchase and reserves policy, aimed at guaranteeing stable price to farmers for their produce.
The area under cotton may dip by about 4.5 percent on average compared to the area under cotton in 2012, according to the report.
The study concludes that cotton is likely to be sown on an area of nearly 70 million Mu (about 4.667 million hectares as 1 hectare = 15 Chinese Mu) in 2013.
