Asian nations account for half of Spanish textile imports

Nearly one-half of the textiles and apparels imported by Spain in 2012 were supplied by Asian countries, according to the latest data from Centro de Informacion Textil y de la Confeccion (CITYC or Centre of Information about Textile and Clothing Industry).

Textile and clothing imports from Asian countries contributed 48 percent to all Spanish textile and apparel imports, while the imports from the EU accounted for 31 percent, the Euro-Mediterranean for 19 percent, and the remaining countries for only two percent.

Although the total textiles and clothing imports by Spain declined last year, imports from some countries like Bangladesh increased.

Bangladesh is currently the fourth largest supplier of textiles and apparels to the EU and Spain, next only to China, Turkey and Italy.

The increase in Bangladeshi garment exports to the EU has been helped by its low labour costs and the duty-free benefit its products enjoy in Europe.

Besides Bangladesh, Spanish textile and clothing imports have grown from South Korea, Philippines and Cambodia in Asia, Ecuador and Peru in Latin America, Madagascar and Egypt in Africa, and Romania and the Czech Republic in Europe.
