China's textile industry performance in 2012: An overview

Labour costs of the Chinese textile industry increased in 2012, and 67.1 percent of the recently surveyed enterprises termed it as the main reason that affected their efficiency last year.

There was an increase in transfer of textile and apparel orders from China to other countries, especially Vietnam and Bangladesh, in 2012.

During the year, large-scale Chinese textile enterprises achieved a 10.5 percent year-on-year growth in industrial added value, which was 0.2 percent less than the growth rate recorded in previous year.

The share of textile industry was 5.6 percent in China’s total industrial production, showing a marginal decline of 0.07 percent compared to the share held a year earlier.

Within the textile industry, synthetic fibre production was 38.11 million tons, up 11.8 percent year-on-year, while fabric output touched 66 billion metres, up 11.5 percent year-on-year, and apparel production registered 26.7 billion pieces, up 6.2 percent year-on-year.

In 2012, the number of new projects in China’s textile industry fell by 5.5 percent year-on-year.

While the investment in cotton textile and dyeing processing industry grew at 12.5 percent year-on-year, the investment in synthetic fibre industry increased by 20.3 percent year-on-year.

Overall, China’s textile and clothing exports registered US$ 262.6 billion in 2012, up 3.3 percent year-on-year. The average export prices increased by 3.9 percent year-on-year, but export volume declined 0.6 percent year-on-year.

Last year, the Chinese textile industry achieved total sales of 5.574 trillion yuan, up 10.7 percent year-on-year, while total profit witnessed a growth of 7.8 percent year-on-year.

However, the number of loss-making textile enterprises too increased by 29.6 percent year-on-year, and the total loss borne by these loss-making enterprises grew by 47 percent year-on-year.
