Mozambican govt launches insurance for cotton growers

The Government of Mozambique, through its Ministry of Agriculture, has initiated an insurance programme for cotton growers in districts of Monapo and Lalaua – the two main cotton producing districts.
 
The programme has been launched as a part of the Government’s Strategic Plan for Development of the Agricultural Sector, macauhub reported quoting Osvaldo Catine, head of the Department for Studies and Projects in the Ministry of Agriculture.
 
Under the scheme, initially only a single sowing would be covered.
 
It is intended to protect rural farmers and also bring more investment in cotton cultivation, Catine said.
 
The Ministry official said cotton producers in the two districts who have lost all or part of their crop during the recent rains would be eligible for a maximum compensation of 3,000 meticals per hectare.
