Textile expo celebrates Thai-Myanmar cordial ties

To mark the 65th anniversary of Thailand and Myanmar relations, an exhibition displaying the traditional textiles of the two Southeast Asian nations, was recently organized in Yangon, the former capital city of Myanmar.
 
Hosted in cooperation with the Yangon and Myanmar Red Cross, the expo titled The Textiles of the Two Lands featured a range of silk apparel and textile collections from different regions and ethnic groups of the two friendly nations.
 
Other than sharing similarities in textiles and their weaving techniques, especially the designs and patterns on silk fabrics, Thai and Myanmar textiles also reflect unique regional features synonymous with the countries’ diversified cultures, said Thai ambassador to Yangon Pisanu Suvanajata at the exhibition. 
 
The two-day-long exhibition also celebrated the 80th birth anniversary of Queen Sirikit of Thailand, who has been largely credited for the success of Thai silk.
 
Apart from celebrating the two anniversaries, a seminar based on the topic of ‘Thai and Myanmar Textiles: Hidden Treasures, Shared Wisdoms’ was conducted by Myanmar textile researcher U Tin Win and Thai curator of Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles in Bangkok Mr. Suthirat Kaew-arphon. 
 
Graced by many important figures of the textile industry from both countries, the seminar included a fashion show which showcased traditional and contemporary clothing lines from Myanmar’s Mogok Pauk Pauk and Thai designer Paothong Thongchua.
