Songket, the indigenous luxury handwoven fabric of Southeast Asian nations like Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia, was showcased at a fashion show hosted by Nilam Larasati Sukanto, the wife of Indonesian Ambassador to Oman, at her residence this week.

Songket is traditionally handwoven in silk or cotton, and intricately patterned with gold or silver threads to create a shimmering effect. The metallic threads are inserted in between the silk or cotton weft threads during the weaving process.

The fabric is generally worn during ceremonies in the form of a headscarf, sarong or a shoulder drape.

At the fashion show, models wore dresses made of Songket fabric from the Indonesian region of Sumatra.

Expatriate women from Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia too attended the event.
