Macedonian govt increases minimum wage in textile sector

The Government of Republic of Macedonia, located in the Central Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe, has increased the minimum wage in the country’s textile industry by Denar 596 in net amount and Denar 1,471 in gross amount.
 
Announcing the new minimum wage, Labour Minister Spiro Ristovski said the Economic-Social Council has approved the decision to hike minimum wage for workers in the textile and leather industries.
 
As a result, the minimum net wage for people working in the textile and leather industries would rise to Denar 6,859 per annum, while the minimum gross wage would increase to Denar 10,990, the Minister said.
 
In other sectors, the minimum net wage in 2013 would be Denar 8,050 and gross wage would be Denar 12,268.
 
Macedonia is one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991. The Macedonian Government started implementing the Law on Minimum Wage in January 2012.
 
The textile sector plays a major role in Macedonian manufacturing industry. In 2011, the industry employed over 40,000 people, accounting for about 35 percent of the country’s total industrial employment.
 
The textile sector also contributes 17 percent to the country’s total exports.
