US textile & apparel imports touch $8.3bn in Feb'13

US imported $8.339 billion worth of textiles and apparels in February 2013, according to the data released by the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA).

February imports were about 3.6 percent lower than $8.652 billion worth of textiles and clothing imported in January 2013.

China was by far the largest exporter of textiles and apparels to the US during the month and accounted for $3.32 billion, i.e. nearly 40 percent of all US imports.

The Asean countries together exported textiles and clothing worth $1.623 billion to the US during the month under review, while the US imports from Western Hemisphere totaled $1.211 billion.

Vietnam, India, Indonesia and Bangladesh were among the top textile and garment exporters to the US in February 2013 and accounted for $705 million, $526 million, $458 million and $452 million, respectively.

In terms of volume, US imported 4.542 billion square metre equivalents (SME) of textiles and garments in February. Of this, 2.193 billion SME of textiles and clothing came from China.

Segment-wise, apparel imports by the US during the month were worth $6.371 billion. Of this, China’s share was $2.34 billion, followed by Vietnam, Indonesia and Bangladesh, which contributed $652 million, $437 million and $436 million, respectively.

US apparel imports from Mexico and India stood at $289.81 million and $289.03 million, respectively.

In terms of quantity, US imported 2.068 billion SME of apparels during the month under consideration, with China accounting for 857 million SME.
